2023/2024 EU Enlargement and Democratic Consolidation

Course objectives:

By the end of the course, students should be able:

 

  1. to demonstrate familiarity with the analytic and theoretical approaches necessary for understanding the dynamics of European Union enlargement, and to use terms such as democratic transition and consolidation, conditionality and Europeanisation;
  2. to explain the interplay of domestic and international factors in the EU enlargement process, in particular in determining the effects of regime transition in post-communist Europe;
  3. to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of previous enlargement waves, and challenges for the future enlargement process;
  4. to produce oral and written arguments using comparative analysis of primary and secondary sources.
