· The course is aimed to increase students’ intercultural sensitivity by articulating unwritten rules which are observed both in public and private life in Slovakia.
· It aims to familiarize students with the anthropological view on ethnicity and the processes of creating the representations of We and the Other.
· Class sessions will consist of lecture and seminar in which students are encouraged to compare diverse environments of the countries they lived in with their corresponding customs or routines.
The course addresses a range of questions related to what it means to be a member of an ethnic group:
· What are the universal and the specific features of any “unwritten rules”?
· How can we compare the rules related to one's origin with rules observed in a foreign country?
· How might our knowledge of the difference between stereotypes and prejudices help us in selection of “survival strategies”?
· Why are the lists of do's and don'ts not applicable in real life situations?
